Underground borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) - the project of the Green Gas DPB, Ltd. in the Czech Republic

The new underground heat storage in Czech Republic is being constructed in the rock environment with the intention of testing reactions of the rock environment on different heat and time regimes. This storage may lessen energy consumption for heating and air conditioning purposes.

The Green Gas DPB company embarked on constructing the underground heat storage in its complex in Paskov. The pilot project was prepared in cooperation with the VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava and the DHI, Ltd. It is aimed at verifying the option of seasonal heat storage placed in the rock environment and its further utilization in district heating systems.

At present, drilling operations are carried out in the underground part of the storage, namely the construction of energy wells that are equipped with a special collector made to handle high temperatures. The heat storage, heat delivery technologies, regulation and system monitoring will be operational in the second half of this year. From 2012 the project’s experimental phase starts and storage is gradually charged with heat power and discharged in different heat and time regimes. Consequently, the rock environment feedback on these different regimes will be analysed. This 4-year project receives support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic.
The Green Gas DPB, Ltd. fosters development of modern technologies utilizing renewable energy sources in the Czech Republic and tries to prove with testing operation experience of the borehole thermal energy storage that the seasonal heat accumulation into the underground storages may significantly decrease energy consumption for heating and air conditioning.
