Italy: new subsidy scheme for solar thermal up to 1000 m²
Large solar thermal plants will receive an incentive of 55 €/m² per year, over a period of 5 years. It could be a good opportunity for solar district heating also.
A new piece of legislation in Italy, released at the end of December 2012 and officially published on the 2nd of January 2013, introduces a support scheme for energy efficiency and renewable heat.
In particular, solar thermal plants can receive an incentive, calculated in €/m² year, for 2 years in case of plants smaller than 50 m² and for 5 years in case of plants larger than 50 m². Plants above 1 000 m² do not fall into the scope of this law.

The following table shows the incentive level for different plant sizes and categories.

The annual cap is 700 M€ for private developers and 200 M€ for public authorities. Once this cap is reached, the competent Ministries should revise and possibly update the scheme.

Regarding the potential application to solar district heating, a calculation example will clarify the relevance: a 1 000 m² solar plant, with a specific turn-key cost of 500 €/m², would receive, in a period of 5 years 275 000 €, which is more than 50% of the investment cost.
