Great interest towards case studies for potential solar district heating plants in Italy
In the framework of the SDHplus project, several utilities showed interest for integration of solar thermal collectors into their district heating networks. It is likely that the first plants will be realized in the near future.

In the framework of the SDHplus project a call for interest among Italian district heating utilities for case studies about integration of solar thermal into district heating networks has been launched in Spring, 2013. AIRU members showed great interest: eight companies answered the call.

AIRU and Politecnico di Milano will realize case studies analysis for interested companies, basically investigating the feasibility of solar thermal plants integration into both, existing and new networks. Four on-site inspections have already been realized for data collection in Lodi (ASTEM), Milano (A2A), Desio (BEA) and Piacenza (IREN). First outcomes are expected in October, 2013.
There are several reasons for such high interest in solar thermal technology. It is likely that many companies are suffering from the competition of conventional heating technologies with other sources. CHP plants have often been running fewer and fewer hours in the last years and gas boilers are needed to cover the demand, which makes district heat less viable for utilities. Furthermore, companies are probably looking towards the future in order to prepare themselves for upcoming new regulation, which will affect the renewable share of district heat. As a matter of facts, current legislation is already supporting renewable energies in DH networks through the building energy certification mechanism. As soon as the energy efficiency directive 2012/27/UE will be translated at national level, rules dedicated to renewable energies will be introduced in Italy.
