And the winner is … Solar District Heating !
Solar district heating systems recently received a lot of acknowledgement all over the world: two awards from the International District Energy Association in New York as well as the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Award in Freiburg.

On 23 September 2013, the Global District Energy Awards Summit took place in New York. The event aims at identifying and recognizing systems that illustrate the overall importance of district energy in providing sustainable solutions. The solar district heating system Sunstore 4 in Marstal, Denmark was awarded in the category ‘small and medium communities serving less than 10 000 citizens’. Also the Princess Noura University for Women district heating in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was attributed a special award for integration of renewable energy (see award results).

On the next day in Freiburg, Germany, the IEA Solar Heating Programme SHC presented its 2013 SHC Solar Award to the Drake Landing Company in Canada which owns and operates the district heating net providing 90% of the space heating demand of 52 homes thanks to solar thermal collectors and a borehole heat storage (see press release).
