SDHp2m is a H2020 European Project whose name stands for Solar District Heating (SDH) and actions from Policy to Market. The region of Styria in Austria is one of three EU regions whose regulatory regional authority is a project partner of SDHp2m. Euroheat & Power had the opportunity to interview one of the representatives from the Provincial Government of Styria, Mr. Dieter Preiß, about the experience of this region so far as a project partner.

District heating based on local renewable energy sources is becoming more and more an appealing solution for small communities in search of energy independence and of a stable price for their thermal energy supply. Such solutions often foresee a strong and direct involvement of the customers who could even own, at the same time, their heating grid by constituting a cooperative company to run the business.

After France had become involved in a couple of EU-supported projects as a newcomer, the country is now ready for take-off in the solar district heating (SDH) market. Monitoring data from the first two French pilot plants show performance to be quite good and the systems to be highly reliable.

The 4th International Solar District Heating (SDH) Conference, which had been organised under the auspices of Horizon 2020 project SDHp2m…from policy to market on 21/22 September 2016 in Denmark, showed the importance of analysing real-life monitoring data from European SDH plants, with one conference session dedicated exclusively to the topic.

Right on time for the opening of the 4th International Solar District Heating Conference in Billund, the host country Denmark reached a magical barrier: more than one Million square meters solar collectors are now installed there. The Danish District Heating Association counted exactly 1 003 024 square meters at the beginning of the Conference on Wednesday, 21st September, in a total of 85 district heating networks supported by solar thermal energy.

In Senftenberg, Brandenburg, the largest solar thermal plant of Germany with 8 300 m² collector was inaugurated. It should deliver 4 GWh in the district heating network of Senftenberg,
25 000 inhabitants, every year.

In the Danish city of Silkeborg, 44 000 inhabitants, the wolrd’s largest solar thermal plant will be installed until the end of the year. The 12 436 large collectors will be mounted on agricultural areas in front of the city’s gate. Completed, the plant will have a total area of 156 694 m².

The 11th ISES EuroSun Conference will take place on 11-14 October 2016 in Palma (Mallorca). One of the conference topics will be 'Solar Assisted District Heating and Cooling and Large Scale Applications'. A session and a poster session will focus on the topic on the 3rd Conference day.

A new joint venture to supply large-scale solar heating solutions was established on Tuesday, 31st of May in Beijing. The Chinese market leader Jiangsu Sunrain and the Danish large-scale solar heating specialist Arcon-Sunmark are behind the new establishment.
